NEWSLETTER            l        January 2023

Welcome to the Stabiliser Cattle Company monthly newsletter, where you will be updated with the latest Stabiliser news.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Stephen Fell

A month of 2023 is already nearly gone and whilst we retain fresh memories of economic uncertainty, huge increases in costs, confusion over support systems and drought followed by deluges, we need to look forward to the rest of this year with confidence. On our side is the current beef price which is a reflection of shortage of supply, but also I believe a demand for good quality home produced beef, based largely on grass based systems. This is great news for the Stabiliser breed where the emphasis through genetic improvement on low cost production should attract new commercial breeders, and improving meat quality which is already attracting attention from meat processors keen on securing regular supplies of consistent quality animals.

The Stabiliser Team are putting together a great programme of open days, sale days and appearances at several shows. I hope that you will participate in some of these events as we continue to raise the profile of the breed, accompanied by more of the excellent articles that we saw in the agricultural press last year.

START 2023 WITH ALL THE FACTS

As a composite animal, Stabiliser cattle fall neither into the continental nor the native breed category. This has caused some people to question precisely what they are and where they fit into the UK beef industry.

Of course, we believe they fit right at the top of the industry when it comes to producing everything the market is looking for. But we appreciate some of you might need a little more convincing.

That’s why we’ve decided to bust some of the myths surrounding this versatile, efficient animal, including some issues people might regard as problems.

HARPER ADAMS UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TALK STABILISERS

It's a privilege to be part of our future farmers learning experience, so when Business Manager Seth Wareing was asked to present at Harper Adams final year students, the answer was always going to be yes.

The students have already been learning about genetics so being able to show some of that technology been put in to practice in the form of genomics was a highlight. The use of EBV's and genomics is a huge part of the Stabiliser philosophy and will remain so. Being able to explain and teach young minds this now will hopefully allow them to make more informed decisions with breeding livestock in the future.

It should go without saying if you would like us to speak at your local agricultural college or young farmers then please reach out.

FARMER REAPING THE BENFITS OF LOW MAINTENANCE SYSTEM

Stabiliser Multipliers Claire and Duncan Morrison who manage the Morrison herd are a newly appointed Deeside monitor farm. They have recently held an open day explaining how a low input, and high output system works for them.

"Most Stabiliser bull calves are kept entire and sold deadweight to Scotbeef at 13 to 14 months. They generally kill out at 350kg to 370kg and realise £1,500."

If you couldn't make the open day you can see a full right up of the day through the link below.
